By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Such a significant change was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I realize I experienced a year full of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant concern for you. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent all day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that authenticity is essential. With so many varied individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who match your vibe.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel lacking. What helped me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something escapes you, chances are others are struggling too. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to hone in your first year. Reach out for support from friends and faculty!

This segues into my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show compassion and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to bond with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the support available. You can never have too much help!

In conclusion, this year has revealed that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the backing available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
