Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and how far have I come?
One of the first and most daunting hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a major worry for you. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet others. Currently, though, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from engaging in casual conversations with those in akin situations. So, what did I take away from this? It’s vital to take that initial leap at the year’s beginning. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the program and the university, you’re likely to meet like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and even more so from the first to the second semester. Existing within such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; witnessing others study might lead you to feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are that others are in the same situation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson for the freshman year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and maintain open communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to engage with faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support offered. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It showed me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun regardless of stress factors like exams and deadlines.
