Not long ago, I completed nine months of residence in London. Although it’s a short period, I’ve gained several insights. London is dynamic, reflecting its wide range of living arrangements and its community spirit. Students enjoy numerous options readily available. Both student accommodations and private housing include possibilities such as ensuite and suite bathrooms, shared and private rooms, studio flats, and house shares. Domestic students can conveniently schedule apartment viewings, while platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom enable international students to explore prospective accommodations online, assess amenities, and access links to public transportation.
During my accommodation search, my goal was to rent a room in Central London to stay close to major landmarks, social centers, and Imperial’s campus. The city is organized into six zones, with zones one and two being the most central. London boasts an outstanding transportation system, comprising the underground (tube), buses, and trains, which simplifies navigation across and between zones. I aimed to minimize travel expenses, as moving between zones could cost up to £5.25 daily. I chose to walk shorter distances rather than relying on a bus or tube. Nevertheless, oyster card options have lowered commuting costs for university. Moreover, London Overground and National Rail services reach areas outside the Underground, extending into zones beyond central London. Fares for inter-zone travel on these services fluctuate based on distance and pricing policies set by each train operator. Central London is home to major attractions, which contributes to high living costs. Thankfully, I attended university with a friend, and we shared a room, which considerably reduced our rent. I preferred intercollegiate student accommodations to interact with peers from various backgrounds and similar age groups, a mix that is often more difficult to find in private rentals.
Staying close to grocery shops was essential for me. Common supermarkets include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op, with budget-friendly options like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland. Being near essential places like supermarkets and pharmacies streamlines errands, especially during exam periods.
Selecting a neighborhood can be daunting. London’s ethnic communities are vital to its cultural identity, presenting varied neighborhoods. Many international students look for connections to their home culture while in London. Southall in West London is home to a significant South Asian population featuring Indian restaurants, grocery shops, and clothing stores. Brixton in South London is celebrated for its Afro-Caribbean community and lively music culture. Chinatown in the West End presents numerous Chinese eateries, shops, and cultural happenings. These are merely a few illustrations of community neighborhoods.
The ideal locations to reside in London are contingent upon your preferences and requirements. When on the hunt for a new residence in London, embrace the variety and depth of its accommodation choices, delve into cultural hubs, and relish the convenience and vibrancy of this extraordinary city.
