Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. The prospect of stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and where do I find myself today?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all thanks to engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that it’s essential to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample icebreaker events to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also discovered that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was balancing the workload and navigating the complexity of the content. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even bigger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are perplexed as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to take full advantage of the resources available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support available from staff and fellow classmates. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to find joy amid stresses like examinations and deadlines.
