Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t typical for my previously timid and introverted self. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On the inaugural day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also grasped that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one of which was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something puzzling, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face hurdles. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I referred to taking leaps at the beginning – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main insight from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being made available to you. You can never get too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the myriad of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
