Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back on the last academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my living quarters, a few days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I realize? It’s essential to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a variety of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can shake your self-assurance; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. Several elements helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to learn during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is superb. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this dimension of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
