Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles I encountered was the process of making friends. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a major concern for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, far too intimidated to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of small talk with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always a good idea. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly okay! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I learned that being authentic is essential. With such a wide variety of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being suddenly placed in such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are encountering difficulties as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Solicit help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty within Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students face. They show empathy and ensure ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment in my life despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
