Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly shy and introverted self was prepared for. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly claim that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with fellow students in similar situations. So, what did I learn? It’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t panic! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you will undoubtedly find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was clearly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be a test for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate this sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally baffled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and understand the challenges students endure. They show empathy towards us and keep open channels of communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized them earlier. Earlier, I spoke of seizing opportunities – I did take one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the help available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased by the support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
