By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be daunting when entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant concern. On my inaugural day moving into my dormitory, just days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day within my room, too daunted to venture out and connect with others. Now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the best friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with light conversations with others experiencing similar situations. So, what did I learn? Taking a step forward at the start of the year is crucial. If you’re not prepared, that’s okay! Numerous ice-breaking activities and events exist to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being genuine is essential. With a wide range of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be taxing for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, others probably are as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to take from the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges faced by students. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had sought it sooner. I spoke of taking risks – I did take one by becoming a year wellness representative. This position enabled me to bond with staff, which is invaluable. There are many opportunities to build rapport with faculty, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased through the support from staff and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never alone and how to relish my experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
