Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most formidable obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I gained from this? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embrace one thing, it’s to be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same position. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for help!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students experience challenges. They show understanding towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me the opportunity to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unjustified and can be alleviated through the diverse support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
