By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. As a first-year student, I had just embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, hurdles, and fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my residence, just days ahead of the academic term, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? Jumping in at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t sweat it! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to help you mingle with others. Additionally, if you can embrace one thing, let it be your true self. With an array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those with similar interests.

Another hurdle was managing the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and even more so transitioning from the first term to the second. Being in such an academic atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might feel less competent compared to your peers. What assisted me was the reminder that we are all in this together. If you struggle with something, I can nearly assure you that others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson for your first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and recognize the challenges students experience. They relate to us and keep the communication flowing throughout the year addressing our anxieties. Although I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your growth! My key lesson is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never on my own and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
