Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting on this past academic year, I see it filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to new people. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say I have formed some of the finest friendships of my life here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it only required starting conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s always best to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t panic! There will be numerous opportunities and events to break the ice and connect with others. I have also discovered that above all, you should be yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the program and the university, you’re sure to find peers who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done it earlier. I highlighted earlier about taking leaps – I initially took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My most significant lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never receive too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the abundant support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has guided me on how to relish my time while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
