Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, scared, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I can see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating parts of commencing university, and for those reading this as potential students, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the term began, I spent the whole day confined to my room because I was too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate interactions with others. I also realized that if there is one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people within the program and the university, you’re bound to encounter individuals like you.

An additional obstacle I needed to tackle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in many ways, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone shares your struggles. If you find something challenging, I can almost guarantee that at least a few others are also grappling with it. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most critical lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which has proven to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for help that are being extended to you. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!

On a broader scale, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself while navigating stressors like exams and deadlines.
