Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Exploring unfamiliar territory was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an upcoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I learn? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to come across like-minded individuals.
Another challenge was the sheer volume of work and complexity of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels and an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are confused as well. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of student challenges. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are various ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
