Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and unclear about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not typical for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most fearsome aspects of beginning university, and if you are a potential student, it might be a significant concern for you. On my first day in my new residence, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent all day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s beneficial to make a move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a notable increase compared to A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can test your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same path. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They empathize and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
