Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it was a time of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university can certainly be quite daunting, and for those reading this as potential students, it might be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, far too daunted to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best course of action. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events will be available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. There’s a vast array of individuals throughout the course and the university; you’re sure to encounter likeminded people.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be a blow to your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me combat that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experiences. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication year-round about our struggles. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a student well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best steps you can take for your personal growth! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance that is available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both pre- and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to have fun even amidst pressures like exams and due dates.
