In October 2022, ten months back, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown wasn’t a scenario my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of initiating university life, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to step out and meet anyone. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with individuals facing similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to aid your interaction with others. I also came to realize that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. There are a multitude of diverse individuals across the program and university; you’re certain to find others like yourself.

Another challenge I had to tackle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was unquestionably a leap from A-levels, and, in some respects, an even larger increase from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may notice others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that several others are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain continuous dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – at the beginning of the year, I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway in this area of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re offered. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased by the myriad of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
