Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly reserved self was used to. In hindsight, I recognize that the year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and mingle. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a wide array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to meet others like yourself.
Another significant challenge was the level of workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming this, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are also puzzled. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson in your first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety about university are often baseless and can be eased by the support from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to enjoy my experience despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
