Authored by Dawson La, Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university is often the most daunting, and for prospective students, it may be a significant concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet anyone. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with fellow students facing similar situations. So, what did I glean from this? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events are available to facilitate connections with others. Furthermore, be authentic. Given the diverse backgrounds of people across the course and the university, you are sure to find individuals who share your mindset.

Another difficulty was the heavy workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and even more markedly from the first to second term. Being in such a challenging environment can be taxing on your self-esteem; you may feel less competent than your peers. What benefited me was remembering that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to take away from the first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students endure. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us all year long. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support available until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position allowed me to get acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are often unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never solitary and how to find joy despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
