By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not a typical experience for my previously reserved self. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles faced, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university can often be one of the most daunting, and if you’re an incoming student, it may present a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can clearly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. What have I realized? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With the diverse array of individuals present in the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can unsettle your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel behind. What aided me was the realization that everyone shares a similar experience. If you’re struggling with understanding something, chances are, others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to peers and staff for help!

Speaking of the staff, the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want to see you thrive and recognize the challenges faced by students. They maintain communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I talked about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the support offered. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness about university are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support available from both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
