Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the primary and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it could be among your major worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and the university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded peers.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some instances, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being cast into such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel less capable. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain steady communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly engage with the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the wide array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to relish my time alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
