Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is indeed one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re looking at this as a prospective student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I was too intimidated to step out and introduce myself. Nevertheless, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve developed a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I absorbed from this? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With the diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was indeed an elevation from A-levels and in certain aspects, a more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who share the same confusion. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the smartest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance you’re being offered. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that nervous feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased by the plethora of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun despite sources of stress like examinations and deadlines.
