Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously shy and reserved self. Reflecting now, I can see a year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, daunted by the prospect of stepping out and greeting others. Today, though, I can assertively say that I have made some of the finest friends I have ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, which all initiated from casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I conclude? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also gleaned that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few elements assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same hurdles. Therefore, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it is certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the various support avenues provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment in spite of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
