Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be a significant concern. On my initial day moving into my dorm, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and meet people. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly claim that I’ve made some of my closest friends here at this university and within this program. I have found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to surmount was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors supported me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you encounter something you don’t comprehend, I can almost assure you that there are at least several others who are in the same position. So, seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed, and they recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance that’s available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are generally baseless and can be mitigated by the various support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
