Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I perceive an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the more fearsome aspects of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it might be one of your major worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, daunted by the idea of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with simple conversations with folks in analogous situations. So, what did I gather from this? I realized that it’s always wise to take a plunge at the onset of the year. If you’re not feeling entirely prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also understood that if you can embody one thing, be your true self. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others like you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel out of place. A few strategies aided me in coping with that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling with comprehension, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who are also grappling with it. So, seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to build relationships with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous pathways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance at your disposal. You can’t accumulate too much!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
