Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s crucial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embrace one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge encountered was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few aspects helped me navigate through those feelings, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that there are others in the same position. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help available. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has reinforced that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have a good time while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
