Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my dormitory, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve fostered some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable predicaments. So, what insights did I gain? It’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a wide array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who share your outlook.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a palpable shift from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, chances are others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson in the initial year. Reach out to classmates and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges faced by students. They empathize and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
