Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not a familiar experience for my previously timid and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles I faced was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be a considerable worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, several days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to step outside and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with simple conversations with people in similar predicaments. So, what did I learn? I discovered that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With so many varied individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who vibe with you.
Another challenge I encountered was handling the workload and the intensity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are also having difficulties. Therefore, seek help. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate in the first year. Seek guidance from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They are invested in your success and understand the hurdles students experience. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had acted sooner. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of it!
In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never isolated and has taught me how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
