Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I actually spent the entire day in my room, far too nervous to step outside and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the best friendships I have ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with fellow students facing similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is beneficial. If you aren’t ready or feel uneasy, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the demands of coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may witness peers studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost promise that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most vital lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from both fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials Science are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They understand our challenges and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are various ways to interact with faculty, and doing so is among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often exaggerated and can be mitigated by the extensive support options provided by faculty and peers. It has revealed to me that I am never truly alone and has instructed me on how to have fun amidst stresses such as exams and deadlines.
