Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most formidable obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step out and socialize. At this point, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being oneself is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe fellow students studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to excel and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until the year was coming to a close, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and students. I’ve realized I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
