Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about the path that lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into unfamiliar territory wasn’t exactly what my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, too shy to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people who shared similar experiences. So, what did I discover? It’s advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in engaging with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse population throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter individuals with similar interests.
Another challenge I faced was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a challenging atmosphere can strain your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and question your own capabilities. What aided me was the reminder that everyone experiences similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are in the same position. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to achieve success and understand the challenges faced by students. They empathize with us and keep open communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I referred to taking chances before – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own well-being! My primary lesson is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness about university are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even in the face of pressures like exams and deadlines.
