Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be your greatest worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to go out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can wear down your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate through that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone faces similar struggles. If something isn’t clear, I can nearly guarantee that others are confused too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Look for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned making leaps before – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased by the various support options offered by the staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
