Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I have made some of the most amazing friends here at this university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breakers and gatherings to aid you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you will inevitably meet those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the coursework and the difficulty of the topics. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and grasp the challenges students encounter. They resonate with us and ensure ongoing communication about our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support options from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
