Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of starting university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely required initiating small conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is always preferable. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something challenging to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Turn to your peers and the teaching staff for support!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps—I embarked on one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased by the multitude of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment even amidst challenges like examinations and deadlines.
