Around ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I observe a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be a substantial worry for you. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and this journey commenced with light conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I grasped? I discovered that taking bold steps at the onset of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that being true to yourself is vital. With such a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the sheer volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Existing in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Look for help from your classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They are invested in your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and engage in continuous communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had embraced it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for the year. This position enabled me to forge relationships with the staff, which is immeasurable. There are many paths to connect with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary insight is to utilize the available assistance. You can never have excessive support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that apprehensive feelings regarding university are often baseless and can be lessened with the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never solitary and has equipped me with the ability to find joy despite pressure from exams and deadlines.
