Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting back, I now see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may rank among your largest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today I can assertively claim that I’ve made some of the finest companions I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I realized that it’s always best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and activities will help you engage with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the challenge of the material. There was definitely a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and start to feel inadequate. What assisted me through that sensation was the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support provided. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy in myself despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
