Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, obstacles, and ample enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it likely ranks high on your list of worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what lesson did I take away? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, I realized that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one of which was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who also do not comprehend it. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep in touch us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did take a step at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support being offered to you. You can never have too much help!

Generally, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has helped me learn how to enjoy myself in the midst of stressors like exams and deadlines.
