Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to step outside and mingle with others. Today, however, I proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk early in the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or secure, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also realized that if you have to be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to building confidence; one may observe others studying and feel somewhat inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this feeling, one of which was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find yourself confused, I can nearly promise that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support that is available to you. You can never have too much help!
On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the wide range of support resources accessible from both staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has instructed me on how to revel in life along with the stresses brought on by exams and deadlines.
