Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most overwhelming challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that it’s always beneficial to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I’ve learned that if you can embody one thing, just be yourself. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to find people like yourself.

Another obstacle I needed to tackle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you stumble over something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are equally confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get familiar with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for your benefit! My main takeaway from this dimension of university life is to utilize the assistance that’s being offered to you. There’s never too much help!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated through the wide range of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun even alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
