Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively claim that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse crowd across the program and university, you’re sure to find kindred spirits.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain an ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took a significant step at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undeniably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the various support services available from staff and peers. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
