Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshmen student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting features of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and greet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? It’s ideal to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With a diverse array of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the challenge of the content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can have an impact on your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inferior. What benefitted me was recalling that everyone faces similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, likely, others are confused as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I’d done so sooner. I spoke earlier about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance that is offered. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has revealed that feelings of anxiety regarding university are frequently misplaced and can be diminished through the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never alone and how to have a good time regardless of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
