Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect of commencing university is distinctly one of the more daunting ones, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to emerge and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly say I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are certain to encounter people like you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting doesn’t always do wonders for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t comprehend. Therefore, seek assistance. This may very well be the single most crucial thing to master in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our struggles. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is highly beneficial. There are countless ways to build rapport with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the myriad support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to find joy alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
