Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nine months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding my future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my once reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. So, what have I gained from this experience, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the inaugural day of moving into my residence, merely days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step outside and socialize. Today, I can assertively say I’ve cultivated some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I learned? It is wise to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be yourself. With such a diverse population across the course and the university, you are sure to encounter individuals like yourself.

Another challenge involved managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can influence your self-esteem; you might feel inferior in comparison to others. What aided me was the awareness that everyone shares similar experiences. If you are struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t make the most of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My key insight is to seize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of it!

In conclusion, this year illuminated the fact that apprehensive feelings about university are usually unfounded and can be mitigated with the support available from faculty and peers. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
