Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might rank among your top worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? It’s beneficial to take a chance right at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being thrown into such a setting can shake your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What supported me was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the obstacles that students encounter. They show understanding and stay in regular contact with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to establish connections with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the assistance provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I’m never truly alone and taught me how to have a good time despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
