Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I see a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too afraid to step out and meet others. Nonetheless, I can now proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I have ever had here at university and in this program. I have developed a second family at Imperial, and everything began with light conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there is one thing you can be, it is yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those similar to you.

Another obstacle was the amount of work and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a substantial increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, a noteworthy jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also do. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the instructors!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to us and keep an open line of communication throughout the year concerning our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources until the latter part of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I made one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish rapport with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your well-being! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunities for assistance available. You can never receive too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy in the midst of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
