Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed by nerves, fears, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself to others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve created some of my closest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I understood that it’s best to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I talked about taking leaps before—I took one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be alleviated by the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
