Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your largest concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can confidently state that I have made some of the best friends of my life here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and the difficulty of content. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who are also in the same predicament. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students experience difficulties. They resonate with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are many ways to interact with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
