Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was the social aspect of making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearful challenges of starting university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it might rank as one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to those around me. However, today, I can affirm with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had during my time at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small conversations with others facing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, do not fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it should be yourself. With an array of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost promise that there are others who are in the same situation. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had reached out sooner. I spoke of taking leaps at the start; I did take one by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This role provided me with the chance to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this dimension of university life is to seize the support that is made available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the various support systems accessible from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never solitary and shown me how to enjoy my experience alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
