Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! However, what have I discovered, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most terrifying aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re a potential student, it may be a significant worry. On my move-in day, just days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? Taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events will allow you to interact with others. Additionally, be genuine. With such a diverse array of people in the course and institution, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might feel less capable in comparison to your peers. What helped me was remembering that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something baffling, chances are others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary message is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased with the backing available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to relish my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
