Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the academic year, I recognize a path filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be quite daunting when commencing university, and for prospective students, it might be a considerable worry. On my initial day settling into accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too shy to engage with others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here, establishing a second family at Imperial. It all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. I discovered that taking a step forward at the start of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared, there’s no need to fret; numerous ice-breaker activities can aid you in making connections. Additionally, being authentic is vital, as you’ll find like-minded individuals in such a varied setting.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content, which represented a significant advancement from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. This can impact your self-esteem, particularly when you compare yourself to peers. Keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do too. Seeking assistance is crucial, whether from fellow students or faculty.
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students face, maintaining open communication throughout the year. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until later but wish I had utilized it earlier. I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the staff, an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that apprehensions about university are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through support from both staff and students. I’ve learned that I’m never isolated and how to relish my time, despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
